Bistatic VHF and UHF SAR for urban environments

چکیده
Bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables new defense as well as environmental applications where the characteristics of the bistatic reflectivity can be exploited. Experimental results obtained with microwave systems have been reported but not much is published using lower frequencies (< 1GHz). FOI has been active in this part of the electromagnetic spectrum for many years with the development and operation of two airborne SAR sensors, i.e. CARABAS-II (20-90 MHz) and more recently LORA (200-800 MHz). During 2006 experimental work was initiated to investigate the challenges of implementing a bistatic low frequency SAR system. Various synchronization tests were made in the lab as a preparation for the first bistatic VHF SAR data registrations. An area in the vicinity of Linköping city was illuminated using CARABAS-II as the airborne transmitter and the LORA radar electronics as a stationary roof-top mounted receiver unit. The latter was reconfigured to be able to handle the frequency interval 20-90 MHz. The approximately 4.1 km by 4.1 km large common radar scene contains urban environments, open areas and forested parts. The CARABAS-II sensor simultaneously registered monostatic SAR data to facilitate the image interpretation by comparisons although the incidence angle on receive differs considerably.

A High-Resolution, Four-Band SAR Testbed with Real-Time Image Formation
This paper describes the Twin-Otter SAR Testbed developed at Sandia National Laboratories. This SAR is a flexible, adaptable testbed capable of operation on four frequency bands: Ka, Ku, X, and VHF/UHF bands. The SAR features real-time image formation at fine resolution in spotlight and stripmap modes. High-quality images are formed in real time using the overlapped subaperture (OSA) image-form...

This work deals with the design of multimode/multifrequency airborne radar suitable for imaging and subsurface sounding. The system operates at relatively low frequencies in the band ranging from VHF to UHF. It is able to work in two different modalities: (i) nadir-looking sounder in the VHF band (163MHz) and (ii) side-looking imager (SAR) in the UHF band with two channels at 450MHz and 860MHz....
متن کاملMoving target detection in foliage using along track monopulse synthetic aperture radar imaging
This paper presents a method for detecting moving targets embedded in foliage from the monostatic and bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data obtained via two airborne radars. The two radars, which are mounted on the same aircraft, have different coordinates in the along track (cross-range) domain. However, unlike the interferometric SAR systems used for topographic mapping, the two radars...
متن کاملONERA-DLR bistatic SAR campaign: planning, data acquisition, and first analysis of bistatic scattering behaviour of natural and urban targets
Bistatic configuration is an attractive concept for spaceborne and airborne SAR missions when distributed radars are necessary as for example in the case of interferometric applications. The first reason is the important cost reduction achieved over the multiple radar elements, by having only one transmitter (expensive part) and multiple receivers. The most promising applications are single-pas...
